Madhubani, in the Mithila region bordering Nepal, gives its name to the Madhubani style of painting, a registered Geographical Indication; the district’s ponds produce makhana and fish, and the border town of Jaynagar has a rail link into Nepal. Our FSSAI service for food businesses in Madhubani covers registrations, licences, modifications and annual compliance through the FoSCoS portal.

Serving food businesses in Madhubani online: you tell us what you make or sell and your expected turnover; we identify the right registration or licence, collect the documents over WhatsApp and file the application.

FSSAI registration in Madhubani: which licence you need

There are three tiers. Registration covers food businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore; a State licence covers those above ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crore; a Central licence applies above ₹50 crore and to activities such as import. These limits took effect on 1 April 2026. Applications are made on the FoSCoS portal under the “kind of business” that matches your activity — manufacturing, retail, storage, transport, catering and so on.

Registrations and State licences for premises in Bihar are granted by the state’s food safety authority through its designated officers; Central licences are issued by FSSAI’s own regional office. In every case the application, fee payment and certificate are on the FoSCoS portal, so no visit to the office is normally required.

The food trade in Madhubani and what the law asks of it

Makhana is harvested from Madhubani’s ponds, popped in village units and sent to wholesalers; fish from the same ponds supplies local and distant markets. Popping and packing units are manufacturers and need registration; pond owners selling their own raw harvest do not. The towns have the usual sweet shops, grocery stores and eateries, with a brisk trade at Jaynagar from cross-border travellers.

Makhana popping and packing units

Manufacturer registration and labelled packs.

Fish traders

Registration for traders; no formalin or other prohibited preservative.

Sweet shops and eateries

Basic registration with certificate on display.

What applies to each kind of food business

Food Processing Units. What a processing unit prints on its pack is regulated as closely as what goes into it. The label must carry the name of the food, the ingredient list, nutritional information, the vegetarian or non-vegetarian mark, net quantity, batch number, the dates of manufacture and expiry or “use by”, the maker’s name and address, and the FSSAI logo with the licence number. Claims such as “natural”, “fresh” or “no added sugar” are allowed only where the product meets the conditions set for them.

Produce, Honey, Fish & Meat Traders. Farmers selling their own raw produce are outside the licensing requirement, but traders, commission agents, packers and processors of fruit, vegetables, honey, fish and meat are not. Meat and fish shops have specific hygiene conditions; honey and packed produce need labels. Units that grade, wax, pulp or pack fruit are treated as processors.

Sweet Shops & Dairies. Sweet shops are sampled most in the weeks before Holi, Diwali and Chhath, and the usual failures are predictable: adulterated or old khoya, non-permitted colours, and frying oil used too many times. A shop must display whether its sweets are made in ghee, vanaspati or oil, and show a “best before” date for loose sweets. Workers handling food need a yearly medical check.

What running without the right licence risks

  • A product that is perfectly safe can still be seized and penalised as misbranded because of its label.
  • Organised buyers and exporters source only from traders and packers who can show an FSSAI number.
  • A failed festival-season sample can mean a fine and prosecution, whether or not the shop was registered.
  • Operating a food business without a registration or licence is an offence under the Food Safety and Standards Act, with penalties that can run into lakhs of rupees.
  • Licences now continue without renewal, but missing the annual fee or return leads to automatic suspension.

From category check to certificate: our process

  1. Scoping. Activity, products, capacity and turnover are noted so that the tier and the kind of business are right the first time.
  2. Paperwork. We prepare the declaration, the product list and — for licences — the layout plan, equipment list and food safety plan with you.
  3. Filing and queries. The application is filed on FoSCoS; if the officer raises a query or schedules an inspection, we respond and guide you through it.
  4. Grant and upkeep. The licence is issued and shared; annual fee, annual return and any modification are tracked from then on.

Documents and details we need

What is needed depends on the tier. For most food businesses:

Errors that get applications returned

For a food business in Madhubani, nothing in the FSSAI process requires travelling to an office: documents are uploaded, the fee is paid online and the certificate is downloaded from the portal.

Applications from Madhubani are prepared at our Patna office, and we say so openly. If you prefer to hand papers to someone in person, a local agent in Madhubani is the right choice; if you want the correct category, a complete application and a reminder system afterwards, we can do that from here.

Questions about FSSAI registration in Madhubani

A grower selling his own primary produce in raw form is generally outside the registration requirement. Once you pop, roast, flavour or pack it for sale, you are processing food and need to register as a manufacturer.

At the least: the name of the food, ingredients in descending order, nutritional information, the vegetarian or non-vegetarian mark, net quantity, batch or lot number, the dates of manufacture and expiry or “use by”, the manufacturer’s name and address, and the FSSAI logo with the licence number. Very small packs have some relaxations.

A farmer selling his own primary produce does not. Once the produce is traded by someone else, or graded, packed, bottled or processed — honey bottling or fruit pulp, for example — the person doing that needs a registration or licence.

Yes. Sweet shops and eateries are required to display a notice stating which items are prepared in ghee, edible oil or vanaspati, so that customers are not misled. Loose sweets must also carry a “best before” date on the tray or container.

Under the rules in force from April 2026, registrations and licences continue without periodic renewal. Instead, the annual fee must be paid and the annual return filed; if either is missed, the licence is treated as suspended until it is set right.

Generally yes — each premises where food is handled needs its own registration or licence. A business working in more than one state also needs a Central licence for its head office.
