About this GST calculator

This calculator does the two sums people need most often with GST: adding GST to a price that does not include it, and finding how much of a GST-inclusive price is tax.

Choose whether the sale is within the state or to another state. Within the state the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST; to another state the whole amount is IGST. Only the split that applies is shown, so the two are never mixed up.

How the calculation works

  1. Adding GST to a price

    GST = price × rate ÷ 100. Final amount = price + GST. At 18%, a price of ₹1,000 becomes ₹1,180.

  2. Taking GST out of a price

    GST = inclusive price × rate ÷ (100 + rate). Base amount = inclusive price − GST. At 18%, ₹1,180 contains ₹180 of GST on a base of ₹1,000.

  3. CGST + SGST or IGST

    For a sale within the state each of CGST and SGST is half the rate. For a sale to another state, IGST is the full rate. The total tax is the same either way.

  4. Rounding

    Each tax amount is rounded to the nearest paisa, and the components always add up to the total GST shown.

What this calculator does not cover

  • The calculator does not tell you which rate applies to a product or service. That depends on its HSN or SAC classification and on any exemption.
  • Compensation cess and other levies charged on some goods in addition to GST are not included.
  • Input tax credit, reverse charge and composition scheme rates are not covered.
  • Whether a sale is within the state or to another state depends on the place of supply rules, which you need to decide before choosing the split.

GST returns and registration

Working out the tax on an invoice is the easy part. Reporting it correctly every month or quarter, matching input tax credit and replying to notices is where businesses need help.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100. For example, 18% GST on ₹5,000 is ₹900, so the final amount is ₹5,900.

Multiply the inclusive price by the rate and divide by 100 plus the rate. For a price of ₹5,900 that includes 18% GST: 5,900 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹900 of GST, and the base amount is ₹5,000.

CGST goes to the centre and SGST to the state; both are charged, at half the rate each, on a sale within one state. IGST is charged at the full rate on a sale from one state to another. A single sale carries either CGST + SGST or IGST, not both.

The main rates in force from 22 September 2025 — 5%, 18% and 40%, besides nil — the special rates used for diamonds, gold and jewellery, and the earlier 12% and 28% rates for invoices dated before that change. You can also enter any other rate.

Each component is rounded to the nearest paisa, as it would be on an invoice. The total GST shown is always the sum of the components, so it can differ by a paisa from an unrounded figure.
