About this advance tax calculator
Advance tax is income tax paid during the year in which the income is earned, in instalments, instead of in one amount at the end. It applies when the tax payable for the year, after TDS and TCS, reaches the threshold.
Enter your estimated tax for the year and what has been deducted at source. The calculator shows the amount that should have been paid by each due date, compares it with what you have paid, and works out the interest for instalments that were short or late.
The financial years covered are FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. If you have not estimated the year's tax yet, the Income Tax Calculator gives that figure.
How the calculation works
-
Tax payable for the year
Estimated tax on the whole year's income less TDS and TCS. If this is below the threshold, no advance tax is due.
-
Amount due by each date
A fixed share of the year's tax must be paid by each due date: 15%, 45%, 75% and 100%, cumulatively.
-
Shortfall
What should have been paid by a date less what was actually paid by then.
-
Interest on the shortfall
Simple interest of 1% a month on the shortfall — for three months on each of the first three instalments and one month on the last. No interest is charged on the first two if at least 12% and 36% were paid in time.
Due dates and percentages the calculator uses
| Instalment | Due date — FY 2026-27 | Due date — FY 2025-26 | Total paid by then |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 June 2026 | 15 June 2025 | 15% of the year's tax |
| 2 | 15 September 2026 | 15 September 2025 | 45% of the year's tax |
| 3 | 15 December 2026 | 15 December 2025 | 75% of the year's tax |
| 4 | 15 March 2027 | 15 March 2026 | 100% of the year's tax |
- Advance tax applies when the tax payable for the year, after TDS and TCS, is ₹10,000 or more.
- Under the presumptive taxation scheme the whole amount is due in one instalment by 15 March 2027 (FY 2026-27).
- A shortfall in an instalment carries simple interest of 1% a month.
Figures last checked on 3 October 2026. Tax rules change — the year and rule set used are shown with every result.
What this calculator does not cover
- The result is only as good as the estimate of the year's tax. Income that arrives unexpectedly, such as a capital gain, changes it.
- Interest for paying less than 90% of the final tax as advance tax, and interest for filing the return late, are separate and not calculated.
- Relief from interest where the shortfall is caused by capital gains, winnings or new business income arising late in the year is not applied.
- Companies and other non-individual taxpayers have the same due dates but may have other rules; the taxpayer types offered here are for individuals.
Planning tax through the year
Advance tax is easiest when the year's income is reviewed before each due date. We estimate the tax, tell you what to pay and when, and adjust it as your income changes.
