Katihar, in eastern Bihar near the West Bengal border, is a major railway junction and a divisional headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway; the district grows makhana, maize, banana and jute. Salaried staff, traders, professionals and pensioners here all file on the same portal, but each needs a different form and a different set of checks before the return goes in.

Income tax return filing in Katihar: what is involved

Choosing the form is the first step — ITR-1 for simple salary and interest income, ITR-2 for capital gains or multiple properties, ITR-4 for presumptive business or professional income, ITR-3 for regular books — followed by reconciling Form 16, the tax statement and the Annual Information Statement. Under the new regime, income up to ₹12 lakh carries no tax after rebate, but the return is still required above the basic exemption.

Returns for a financial year are due by 31 July for salaried and other non-business taxpayers, 31 August for business and professional returns without audit, and 31 October where a tax audit applies. From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies and the year is called the “tax year”. Bihar levies professional tax on salaries; the amount your employer deducts is allowed as a deduction under the old regime. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Katihar falls in the 40%-of-salary category; the 50% limit applies only to eight notified metro cities.

Who files income tax returns in Katihar

Railway employees form the core of Katihar’s salaried class — the division’s offices, loco sheds and station employ thousands — joined by staff of a private medical college and government offices. Grain and makhana traders operate on thin margins with high turnover. Farmers growing maize and makhana on a commercial scale receive large seasonal payments that are exempt but visible in their accounts.

Income tax by type of taxpayer

Government & Bank Staff. Government and bank employees usually have a clean Form 16, but arrears, GPF or NPS contributions, and allowances are where returns go wrong. Salary arrears received in one year can be spread back to the years they relate to by filing Form 10E before the return — skip that form and the relief is denied.

Shop Owners & Traders. Small businesses can use the presumptive scheme: declare at least 8% of turnover as income (6% for receipts through banks and UPI) and skip detailed books, for turnover up to ₹2 crore — or ₹3 crore where cash receipts stay within 5%. The catch is consistency: declare lower profit, or leave the scheme, and books and audit can become compulsory for five years.

Farmers & Landowners. Not everything earned on a farm is agricultural income. Growing and selling crops, and rent or lease money from farm land, are exempt. Dairy, poultry, fishery and trading in produce bought from others are businesses and are taxable in the normal way, though the presumptive scheme usually applies. Crop sale proceeds and Kisan Credit Card transactions passing through the bank are best supported by mandi slips and land records.

Why the details in a return matter

  • Employees who receive arrears and file without Form 10E pay tax at a higher slab on money that belonged to earlier years.
  • A trader who declares less than the presumptive rate without audited books invites exactly the scrutiny the scheme was meant to avoid.
  • A buyer of land worth ₹50 lakh or more deducts 1% TDS unless it is rural agricultural land — and that TDS is recovered only by filing.
  • Banks and visa offices usually ask for the returns of the last two or three years, filed on time.
  • A return filed after the due date carries a late fee and interest, and some losses can no longer be carried forward.

How the filing works, step by step

  1. First conversation. We note your sources of income and tell you exactly which documents are needed — no generic list.
  2. Reconciliation. Salary, interest, TDS and reported transactions in the AIS are tied to your records; any wrong entry is flagged for feedback on the portal.
  3. Regime and form. Old and new regimes are computed side by side, the correct ITR form is chosen and the draft is shared with you.
  4. File, verify, follow up. After your approval we file and e-verify, then track processing, the intimation and the refund.

Questions about income tax filing in Katihar

Running allowance paid to loco pilots, guards and other running staff is exempt to the extent of a prescribed percentage, with a monthly cap, because it compensates for duty expenses. The balance is taxable. Your Form 16 should show the exempt part separately.

Not necessarily. Relief is available so that arrears are taxed as if received in the years they belong to. It requires Form 10E to be filed on the portal before the return; we prepare the year-wise working and file both.

Not if you opt for the presumptive scheme and declare income at or above the prescribed percentage of turnover. If you declare a lower profit and your income exceeds the exemption limit, books and a tax audit become necessary.

No. Agricultural income comes from cultivating land. Dairy, poultry, fish farming and bee-keeping are business activities and their profit is taxable, though small operators can generally use the presumptive scheme and avoid detailed books.

An intimation after processing is routine — it either confirms your figures or shows an adjustment. A defective-return notice or a query on mismatch needs a reply within the time given. Send us the notice and we will explain it and respond.

The fee is fixed and quoted in writing before we start, based on the type of income — a salary-only return costs less than one with capital gains or business income. The first consultation is free.
