Katihar, in eastern Bihar near the West Bengal border, is a major railway junction and a divisional headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway; the district grows makhana, maize, banana and jute. Every registered business here — from a counter in the main bazaar to a unit in the industrial area — works to the same GST calendar, and a missed return costs the same per day wherever you are.

Tax VKV Group offers GST return filing online to businesses in Katihar: you send the month’s sales and purchase data, we reconcile and file, and you receive the acknowledgement along with a one-page summary of tax paid and credit claimed.

Serving businesses in Katihar online. Our team works from Noida, Uttar Pradesh — we do not run a branch in Katihar. Documents are shared over WhatsApp or email and every filing is made on the official government portal.

GST return filing in Katihar: what the work involves

Regular taxpayers file GSTR-1 for outward supplies and GSTR-3B for the summary and tax payment, monthly or — under the QRMP scheme for turnover up to ₹5 crore — quarterly with monthly payment. Composition taxpayers file CMP-08 each quarter and GSTR-4 annually. Above the notified turnover limit (currently ₹2 crore) the annual return GSTR-9 is added. Every period needs a return, including nil periods.

In Bihar, registration becomes compulsory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for services), and quarterly QRMP filers have until the 24th of the month after the quarter for GSTR-3B. Inter-state sellers and most online sellers must register regardless of turnover.

GST in Katihar: the local business picture

Katihar is a railhead for the produce of the Kosi–Mahananda plains. Maize, makhana, bananas and jute are bought in its markets and dispatched by rake and truck, much of it to West Bengal and beyond — so inter-state movement and e-way bills are routine even for traders dealing in exempt goods. Raw jute is exempt while jute goods are taxable; makhana changes status with packing. The town’s wholesale markets also supply neighbouring districts.

Makhana and maize traders

Exempt and taxable supplies, with inter-state dispatches documented.

Jute traders and processors

Raw fibre exempt; yarn, bags and other jute goods taxable.

Transporters loading at the railhead

Treatment of freight for agricultural produce versus other goods.

GST by type of business

Agri Traders & Input Dealers. Dealers in farm inputs sell goods with very different treatment side by side — seeds for sowing are exempt, fertilisers carry a concessional rate, and pesticides, pump sets and sprayers have rates of their own. Storage and warehousing of agricultural produce is exempt, as is commission on the sale of produce by an agent in a mandi, but once produce is processed, branded or packed for retail it leaves that protected category.

Wholesalers & Distributors. A distributor’s input credit has a shelf life. Credit on a purchase invoice must be claimed by 30 November after the financial year it belongs to, or it lapses — even if the supplier uploads the invoice later. Outward supplies are reported by HSN code, and once turnover crosses ₹5 crore every B2B invoice has to be an e-invoice. Old unmatched purchase invoices are therefore worth clearing well before the cut-off, not in the last week.

Transporters & Logistics. Goods transport agencies sit in an unusual position: in many cases the tax is paid by the customer under reverse charge, not by the transporter. A transporter can instead opt each year to pay tax under forward charge. The option decides who reports what, whether credit is available and how consignment notes must be worded — so it should be chosen deliberately.

Where GST filing goes wrong — and why it matters

  • A dealer who bills the wrong rate on an input either undercharges tax, and pays it from his own pocket later, or overcharges farmers.
  • Input credit not claimed by 30 November after the financial year is lost for good.
  • A transporter who picks the wrong option for the year either loses credit on trucks and tyres or creates disputes with every customer.
  • Your buyers get input credit only when your GSTR-1 is filed — late filing is one of the quickest ways to lose a B2B customer.
  • Late fees run per day of delay on every pending return, and interest at 18% a year applies on tax paid late.

From your bills to a filed return: our process

  1. Data in. You send the period’s sales and purchase bills — photographed bill books, an Excel sheet or a Tally, Busy or Vyapar export all work.
  2. Reconciliation. We match your purchases with GSTR-2B, list the suppliers who have not uploaded their invoices and work out the correct credit and tax payable.
  3. Your approval. You receive a short summary — sales, credit, tax to pay — and confirm it before anything is filed.
  4. Filing and record. Returns are filed before the due date and the acknowledgements are sent to you, with the next deadline already on our reminder list.

GST filing in Katihar — frequently asked questions

E-way bill rules exempt certain goods, including many unprocessed agricultural products, from the requirement; for other goods the limit is ₹50,000 per consignment for inter-state movement. Check the specific item against the exempt list, and carry the invoice or bill of supply in every case.

Storage and warehousing of agricultural produce — potatoes, grain, fruit and vegetables in their natural state — is exempt. The exemption does not cover storage of processed or packaged goods, so a cold store handling both must split its receipts.

Credit on an invoice must be claimed by 30 November following the end of the financial year to which it belongs, or by the date the annual return is filed, whichever is earlier. After that it lapses, even if the supplier reports the invoice later.

It depends. For a goods transport agency, tax on most business customers is paid by the customer under reverse charge unless the transporter has opted for forward charge that year. Pure truck hire to another transporter and transport of certain agricultural produce are exempt.

A filed return cannot be revised, but most errors can be corrected in a later period — sales details through GSTR-1 amendments or GSTR-1A, and credit through the following GSTR-3B — within the time limits the law allows.

Composition means a flat tax on turnover and four simple payments a year, but no input credit and no inter-state sales. It suits small retailers selling to consumers; it rarely suits anyone selling to GST-registered buyers who want credit.
