FSSAI Registration in Kochi
Online FSSAI Registration & Food License assistance for businesses and individuals in Kochi.
FSSAI registration in Kochi is rarely a single application. Kochi is Kerala’s port city and commercial capital, the historic centre of the spice trade, a base for seafood exports and shipbuilding, with a container terminal, an export processing zone, the Infopark technology campus and a busy tourism sector. A brand may need one licence for its kitchen, another for a warehouse and a Central licence at its head office if it operates in several states.

FSSAI registration in Kochi: which licence you need
Licensing is tiered by turnover — registration up to ₹1.5 crore, State licence above that up to ₹50 crore, Central licence beyond ₹50 crore and for importers — with each premises licensed for its own kind of business. Businesses operating in more than one state also need a Central licence for the head office. From April 2026 licences do not expire, but they are suspended automatically if the annual fee or annual return is missed.
Registrations and State licences for premises in Kerala are granted by the state’s food safety authority through its designated officers; Central licences are issued by FSSAI’s own regional office. In every case the application, fee payment and certificate are on the FoSCoS portal, so no visit to the office is normally required.
The food trade in Kochi and what the law asks of it
Seafood processing plants, spice processors and exporters, importers bringing food through the port, and the restaurants, bakeries and hotels of a tourist city are Kochi’s food businesses. Export units need approvals beyond the FSSAI licence; importers need a Central licence and clearance of each consignment. Premises are licensed by Kerala’s food safety department, which is among the more active in the country.

What applies to each kind of food business
Food Importers & Exporters. Importing food requires a Central licence regardless of turnover, along with an Import Export Code, and each consignment is cleared through FSSAI’s import system at the port. Exporters need a licence for the unit where the food is made or packed, and buyers abroad often ask for additional certification.
Food Processing Units. What a processing unit prints on its pack is regulated as closely as what goes into it. The label must carry the name of the food, the ingredient list, nutritional information, the vegetarian or non-vegetarian mark, net quantity, batch number, the dates of manufacture and expiry or “use by”, the maker’s name and address, and the FSSAI logo with the licence number. Claims such as “natural”, “fresh” or “no added sugar” are allowed only where the product meets the conditions set for them.
Restaurants, Dhabas & Caterers. Once licensed, an eatery is judged on its kitchen: potable water with a test report, food handlers with annual medical certificates, at least one person trained as a food safety supervisor, cooking oil that is not reused beyond the permitted limit, and the food safety display board on the wall. FSSAI’s hygiene-rating scheme scores exactly these points, and larger chains must also show calorie information on menus.
Why the food licence matters
- An imported food consignment without the importer’s Central licence is held at the port.
- A product that is perfectly safe can still be seized and penalised as misbranded because of its label.
- Complaints from customers go straight to the food safety department through an app, and trigger inspections.
- Operating a food business without a registration or licence is an offence under the Food Safety and Standards Act, with penalties that can run into lakhs of rupees.
- Licences now continue without renewal, but missing the annual fee or return leads to automatic suspension.
From category check to certificate: our process
- Scoping. Activity, products, capacity and turnover are noted so that the tier and the kind of business are right the first time.
- Paperwork. We prepare the declaration, the product list and — for licences — the layout plan, equipment list and food safety plan with you.
- Filing and queries. The application is filed on FoSCoS; if the officer raises a query or schedules an inspection, we respond and guide you through it.
- Grant and upkeep. The licence is issued and shared; annual fee, annual return and any modification are tracked from then on.
