FSSAI registration in Bengaluru is rarely a single application. Bengaluru is India’s technology capital, with software and research campuses at Electronic City, Whitefield and along the Outer Ring Road, the country’s most active start-up scene, and an older base of aerospace, machine-tool and garment manufacturing around Peenya. A brand may need one licence for its kitchen, another for a warehouse and a Central licence at its head office if it operates in several states.

FSSAI registration in Bengaluru: which licence you need

Food businesses in Bengaluru rarely fit one box. A brand may manufacture in one unit, store in a warehouse, sell through its own outlets and deliver through apps — and each activity is a separate “kind of business” on the licence, at each address. Turnover sets the tier (registration to ₹1.5 crore, State licence to ₹50 crore, Central beyond), and operating in more than one state adds a Central licence for the head office.

In Karnataka, as in every state, registrations and State licences are issued by the state food safety department through its designated officers and registering authorities, while Central licences come from FSSAI’s regional office. The whole process runs on the FoSCoS portal; an inspection, where ordered, is carried out by the food safety officer of the area.

Food businesses in Bengaluru: who needs FSSAI

Bengaluru is the home market of several food-delivery and quick-commerce companies, and the city is dense with cloud kitchens, darshini-style eateries, cafés, microbreweries and packaged-food start-ups selling health snacks, coffee and ready-to-eat products. Tech-park cafeterias feed lakhs of employees daily. Premises are licensed by Karnataka’s food safety department; brands that pack through contract manufacturers need their own licence as marketers.

FSSAI points by type of business

Cloud Kitchens & Online Food Sellers. Delivery-only kitchens are licensed like restaurants but inspected through their paperwork and their packaging. One licensed kitchen may run several menu brands, each listed on the apps against the same FSSAI number. Food sent out sealed should carry the kitchen’s details, and aggregators periodically audit hygiene. Orders taken through your own website or by phone fall under the same licence.

Packaged-Food Brands & Repackers. Beyond the mandatory panel, what a brand says about its product is regulated. Claims such as “natural”, “fresh”, “no added sugar” or “immunity boosting” are permitted only where the regulations’ conditions are met and evidence is held. Health supplements and nutraceuticals have their own category with ingredient limits. Online listings must show the same information as the physical label, and marketplaces remove products that do not.

Canteens, Hostels & Institutional Kitchens. Bulk cooking brings risks a small kitchen does not have: food held for hours between cooking and serving, large batches cooling slowly, and one lapse affecting hundreds of people. Institutional kitchens are expected to keep cooked food hot or chilled, retain samples of each meal, use potable water, and have handlers medically examined. Institutions should also verify the caterer’s licence, since they share responsibility for who they let in.

Why the food licence matters

  • A customer complaint on an app is forwarded with the kitchen’s FSSAI number attached.
  • Misleading claims attract penalties that are far larger than those for a missing licence.
  • A single food-poisoning incident in a hostel or canteen brings inspection, sampling and often closure of the kitchen.
  • The FSSAI number must appear on labels, menus, invoices and at the premises — buyers and platforms check it.
  • Banks, landlords, marketplaces and government schemes for food units ask for the certificate as basic proof of a lawful business.

How the application works, step by step

  1. Scoping. Activity, products, capacity and turnover are noted so that the tier and the kind of business are right the first time.
  2. Paperwork. We prepare the declaration, the product list and — for licences — the layout plan, equipment list and food safety plan with you.
  3. Filing and queries. The application is filed on FoSCoS; if the officer raises a query or schedules an inspection, we respond and guide you through it.
  4. Grant and upkeep. The licence is issued and shared; annual fee, annual return and any modification are tracked from then on.

Questions about FSSAI registration in Bengaluru

Only if the product meets the conditions laid down for those claims in the food regulations — specific thresholds for protein content or sugars per 100 g. Unsubstantiated nutrition and health claims are a common ground for action against new brands.

One — for the kitchen premises. The licence is for the place where food is prepared, and several brands can operate under it. A second kitchen at another address needs its own registration or licence.

Yes. E-commerce rules under food law require that the mandatory label information — and a legible image of the principal display panel — be available to the buyer before purchase. The seller, not just the platform, is responsible for its accuracy.

It is a recommended practice for bulk catering: a small portion of each item is kept refrigerated for a day or two so that, if anyone falls ill, the food can be tested. Larger institutions often make it a contract condition.

If your turnover is now below the revised ₹1.5 crore limit, you may be able to convert a State licence into a registration, which carries lighter compliance. We check your figures and tell you whether converting is worthwhile.
