Income tax return filing in Kolkata is mostly reconciliation: salary, interest, dividends, securities trades, rent and foreign income all appear in the Annual Information Statement, and the return has to explain each of them. Kolkata is the commercial capital of eastern India — Burrabazar is among the largest wholesale markets in Asia — and the centre of the tea trade, with an IT hub at Salt Lake Sector V, a riverine port and a leather complex at Bantala.

Income tax return filing in Kolkata: what is involved

For taxpayers in Kolkata the return is usually a multi-schedule document: salary from one or more employers, house property with a loan, capital gains split by asset and holding period, other income, and — for residents with overseas shares or accounts — the foreign-assets schedule. Businesses and professionals add a balance sheet or presumptive figures. The new regime is the default; staying in the old one needs a deliberate choice each year.

Returns for a financial year are due by 31 July for salaried and other non-business taxpayers, 31 August for business and professional returns without audit, and 31 October where a tax audit applies. From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies and the year is called the “tax year”. West Bengal levies professional tax on salaries; the amount your employer deducts is allowed as a deduction under the old regime. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Kolkata is one of the eight cities where up to 50% of basic salary can be exempt.

Earning a living in Kolkata — and what your return should show

Kolkata has old trading families with multiple firms, HUFs and investment companies; a salaried middle class in banks, tea and jute companies, IT and government; and a large population of pensioners living on interest and dividends. HUF returns, family arrangements and income from long-held shares and property are more common here than in most cities. West Bengal levies professional tax, and Kolkata is in the 50% category for HRA.

Income tax by type of taxpayer

Shop Owners & Traders. Under the presumptive scheme the whole year’s advance tax falls due in a single instalment by 15 March — a date many shopkeepers miss, and pay interest for. The return is also the document a bank reads when the shop asks for a loan or a higher cash-credit limit, so the income declared has to support the borrowing sought. Banks report cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a year in a savings account, and ₹50 lakh in a current account, to the department.

Salaried Professionals. For salaried people who invest, the return has grown beyond Form 16. Shares of a foreign parent company received as stock units must be listed in the foreign-assets schedule every year they are held, even when nothing was sold; dividends and sale gains on them are taxable in India, with credit for tax withheld abroad claimed through Form 67. Trading in futures and options is business income, reported with its turnover, not a capital gain.

Pensioners & Senior Citizens. Pension is taxed as salary with the standard deduction; family pension has its own smaller deduction. Interest from fixed deposits and senior-citizen savings schemes is where most of the tax lies. Banks deduct TDS once a senior’s interest crosses ₹1 lakh a year unless Form 15H is given — and Form 15H is valid only when total tax for the year is nil.

Why the details in a return matter

  • A shop that declares the bare minimum every year finds its own returns are the reason the bank refuses a larger loan.
  • Leaving foreign shares out of the foreign-assets schedule can attract a penalty under the black-money law even when no tax was due.
  • Seniors who submit Form 15H while actually having taxable income face a demand later, with interest.
  • A return filed after the due date carries a late fee and interest, and some losses can no longer be carried forward.
  • Banks and visa offices usually ask for the returns of the last two or three years, filed on time.

How we prepare your return

  1. Scoping. We list every income head for the year — salary, business, capital gains, rent, foreign assets — and the schedules each one needs.
  2. Statements and workings. Capital-gains statements, broker reports, rent and loan certificates are converted into return schedules and matched with the AIS.
  3. Review. You receive a computation with the regime comparison, advance-tax position and any disclosure points to confirm.
  4. Filing and after-care. The return is filed and e-verified; intimations, defective-return notices or refund adjustments are handled until closed.

ITR filing in Kolkata: common questions

Yes. An HUF is a separate taxpayer with its own PAN, exemption limit and deductions. Income from ancestral property and the HUF’s own business or investments is taxed in its hands, not the members’; salary and personal earnings of members stay in their individual returns.

Yes, if the tax for the year comes to ₹10,000 or more. Under the presumptive scheme it is paid in one instalment by 15 March. Paying later, or only along with the return, adds interest for each month of delay.

Three things. The value at vesting is already taxed as salary in Form 16. The holdings must be disclosed in the foreign-assets schedule of the return each year. And dividends or gains on sale are taxable in India, with credit for any tax withheld abroad claimed through Form 67.

Yes, if income exceeds the exemption limit. A resident aged 75 or more with only pension and interest in the same bank can be relieved from filing if the bank computes and deducts the tax after a declaration. In practice most seniors file to claim refunds of TDS.

The new regime has lower rates and makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free after rebate, but drops most deductions. The old regime helps when HRA, home-loan interest and investments are large. We compute both every year and show you the difference.

Filing is mandatory above the basic exemption limit and in certain cases regardless of income — large bank deposits, foreign travel spend or high electricity bills, for example. Even when optional, a return is often worth filing to claim a TDS refund or to build income proof for loans.
