Income Tax Filing in Lucknow
Online Income Tax Return (ITR) Filing assistance for businesses and individuals in Lucknow.
Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is a city of government offices, hospitals and universities, with the old markets of Aminabad, Chowk and Hazratganj and a craft tradition — chikankari embroidery and zardozi — known across the world. Returns filed from here range from a single Form 16 to audited business accounts, and the Annual Information Statement now shows the department almost everything before you declare it.

Income tax return filing in Lucknow: what is involved
Most returns from Lucknow combine several heads: salary with HRA and perquisites, capital gains from shares, mutual funds or property, rental income and sometimes foreign assets that need separate disclosure. Each is cross-checked with the Annual Information Statement before the old and new regimes are compared and the form — ITR-1 to ITR-4 for individuals — is chosen.
Key dates: 31 July for individuals without business income, 31 August for business and professional returns not requiring audit, 31 October for audited cases, and 31 December for a belated return. Income earned from 1 April 2026 falls under the new Income-tax Act, 2025, which calls the year the “tax year”. Uttar Pradesh does not levy professional tax on salaries, so there is no such deduction to look for in your Form 16. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Lucknow falls in the 40%-of-salary category; the 50% limit applies only to eight notified metro cities.
What the service includes, wherever you are in India, is set out on our Income Tax Filing service page.
Who files income tax returns in Lucknow
Lucknow’s salaried class is largely in public service — the secretariat, directorates, courts, universities, the medical institutes and public-sector banks — with pensioners in proportion. Doctors, advocates of the High Court bench and consultants form a substantial professional group. Property owners earn rent from houses, hostels and shops. Uttar Pradesh levies no professional tax, and the HRA limit in Lucknow is 40%.

Income tax by type of taxpayer
Government & Bank Staff. Government and bank staff are placed in the new regime by default, and the employer deducts tax on that basis unless the employee opts out in writing. Whether the old regime still pays depends on a few items — home-loan interest, GPF and insurance, and HRA for those living in rented quarters — set against the lower rates of the new one. Interest on savings accounts and fixed deposits, which Form 16 leaves out, is taxable under both.
Doctors, Advocates & Consultants. Professionals with receipts up to ₹50 lakh (₹75 lakh if cash receipts are within 5%) may declare half of their receipts as income under the presumptive scheme and file ITR-4. TDS deducted by hospitals, companies and clients appears in the tax statement and must be claimed in full; advance tax is due in a single instalment by 15 March.
Landlords. Owners of more than two houses are taxed on a notional rent for the additional ones even if they lie vacant. Co-owners are taxed separately on their shares when the shares are definite. Rent that cannot be recovered and later arrears have their own rules, and a tenant who is an individual paying more than ₹50,000 a month must deduct tax — as must any business tenant above the annual limit — so the landlord’s PAN should be given.
What a careless return can cost
- Bank interest left out of the return is the most common reason salaried taxpayers receive a mismatch intimation.
- Professionals who ignore advance tax pay interest every year on an amount they could have planned for.
- A third house lying vacant is still taxed on the rent it could reasonably fetch.
- Refunds are issued only after the return is filed, e-verified and processed — and only to a pre-validated bank account.
- The department already sees interest, dividends, share trades and high-value purchases in the AIS; an unexplained gap produces a notice.
How we prepare your return
- First conversation. We note your sources of income and tell you exactly which documents are needed — no generic list.
- Reconciliation. Salary, interest, TDS and reported transactions in the AIS are tied to your records; any wrong entry is flagged for feedback on the portal.
- Regime and form. Old and new regimes are computed side by side, the correct ITR form is chosen and the draft is shared with you.
- File, verify, follow up. After your approval we file and e-verify, then track processing, the intimation and the refund.

Income tax filing in Lucknow — frequently asked questions
For government employees, gratuity, commuted pension, leave encashment at retirement and the GPF balance are exempt. The monthly pension is taxable as salary. Interest earned after you invest the retirement money is taxable in the usual way.
It depends on your deductions. With a home loan, substantial GPF or insurance payments and HRA, the old regime can still give lower tax; with few deductions the new regime, with its ₹75,000 standard deduction and lower rates, usually comes out ahead. We compute both before filing.
The 50% presumptive scheme is for specified professions such as medicine, law, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy and interior decoration. Other freelancers may fall under the business presumptive scheme instead. We check your work against the list before choosing the form.
Each of you is taxed on your own share of the rent, after the 30% deduction, provided the shares are definite and ascertainable — which a sale deed normally shows. The rent is not taxed as an association of persons in that case.
A belated return can be filed until 31 December following the financial year, with a late fee of up to ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if income is up to ₹5 lakh) and interest on unpaid tax. After that an updated return is possible for up to 48 months, at an additional tax cost.
Most refunds are credited within a few weeks of e-verification, once the return is processed. Delays usually come from an unvalidated bank account, a mismatch with the tax statement or an old outstanding demand that is being adjusted — all of which we check for.
