Income tax return filing in Siwan: what is involved
Every return starts from the Annual Information Statement, where the department lists what it has been told about you: salary and TDS, bank interest, contract and professional receipts, property and share transactions. The work is to match that with your own records, pick the right form — ITR-1 and ITR-2 for individuals without business income, ITR-3 and ITR-4 with it — and compute tax under both regimes before choosing one.
Key dates: 31 July for individuals without business income, 31 August for business and professional returns not requiring audit, 31 October for audited cases, and 31 December for a belated return. Income earned from 1 April 2026 falls under the new Income-tax Act, 2025, which calls the year the “tax year”. Bihar levies professional tax on salaries; the amount your employer deducts is allowed as a deduction under the old regime. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Siwan falls in the 40%-of-salary category; the 50% limit applies only to eight notified metro cities.
This page covers Siwan; the service itself is described in full on our Income Tax Filing service page.
Earning a living in Siwan — and what your return should show
Siwan has one of the highest proportions of Gulf migrants in the country, and most income-tax questions here begin with one of them: is the earner a non-resident, which account should the money go to, and who is taxed on what it earns in India. A worker abroad for more than 182 days in the year is a non-resident and his foreign salary is not taxed here — but rent from the house he built, and interest on NRO deposits, are.
Gulf workers and their families
NRE interest exempt for non-residents; NRO interest and rent taxable with TDS.
Owners of let-out houses and shops
Rent after the 30% deduction; TDS by tenants above the limit.
Town traders
Presumptive returns.
What to watch, by type of taxpayer
NRIs & Families Working Away. For someone employed in the Gulf or elsewhere abroad, the first question is residential status: spend fewer than 182 days in India in the year and salary earned abroad is not taxed here. Indian income — rent, NRO interest, sale of property — is still taxable, usually with TDS at higher rates that can only be recovered by filing a return.
Landlords. Rent from house property is taxed after a flat 30% deduction and municipal taxes, with interest on a loan for that property also deductible. Tenants paying more than ₹50,000 a month must deduct TDS, and commercial tenants deduct it above the annual limit — so the rent appears in your tax statement whether or not you report it.
Shop Owners & Traders. Under the presumptive scheme the whole year’s advance tax falls due in a single instalment by 15 March — a date many shopkeepers miss, and pay interest for. The return is also the document a bank reads when the shop asks for a loan or a higher cash-credit limit, so the income declared has to support the borrowing sought. Banks report cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a year in a savings account, and ₹50 lakh in a current account, to the department.
Why filing the return properly matters
- NRIs often suffer TDS at the maximum rate on property sales and NRO interest, and the excess comes back only through a return.
- Rent on which the tenant has deducted TDS is already in the department’s records under your PAN.
- A shop that declares the bare minimum every year finds its own returns are the reason the bank refuses a larger loan.
- Refunds are issued only after the return is filed, e-verified and processed — and only to a pre-validated bank account.
- The department already sees interest, dividends, share trades and high-value purchases in the AIS; an unexplained gap produces a notice.
From documents to a filed return: our process
- First conversation. We note your sources of income and tell you exactly which documents are needed — no generic list.
- Reconciliation. Salary, interest, TDS and reported transactions in the AIS are tied to your records; any wrong entry is flagged for feedback on the portal.
- Regime and form. Old and new regimes are computed side by side, the correct ITR form is chosen and the draft is shared with you.
- File, verify, follow up. After your approval we file and e-verify, then track processing, the intimation and the refund.

Income tax filing in Siwan — frequently asked questions
Foreign earnings are best kept in an NRE account: interest on it is exempt in India while you remain a non-resident, and the money is freely repatriable. Income arising in India — rent, for example — goes into an NRO account, where interest is taxable and subject to TDS.
Money sent home by a relative is not income of the family and is not taxed as a gift between specified relatives. Your own foreign salary is not taxable in India if you are a non-resident for the year. Interest earned in India on those funds, however, is taxable in the hands of whoever owns the deposit.
Annual rent, less municipal taxes paid, less a standard 30% deduction, less interest on a loan taken for that property, is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. No other expenses are allowed. A property lying vacant the whole year is treated differently.
Yes, if the tax for the year comes to ₹10,000 or more. Under the presumptive scheme it is paid in one instalment by 15 March. Paying later, or only along with the return, adds interest for each month of delay.
A belated return can be filed until 31 December following the financial year, with a late fee of up to ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if income is up to ₹5 lakh) and interest on unpaid tax. After that an updated return is possible for up to 48 months, at an additional tax cost.
Most refunds are credited within a few weeks of e-verification, once the return is processed. Delays usually come from an unvalidated bank account, a mismatch with the tax statement or an old outstanding demand that is being adjusted — all of which we check for.
