Mumbai is India’s financial capital — home to the stock exchanges, the Reserve Bank and the head offices of banks and funds — and also a port city with a jewellery trade at Zaveri Bazaar, an export zone at SEEPZ and the country’s largest film and media industry. For a business here, GST compliance is a monthly operating process — invoices, e-invoices, GSTR-1, GSTR-2B reconciliation, GSTR-3B — and the cost of getting it wrong is blocked credit rather than just a late fee.

Tax VKV Group offers GST return filing online to businesses in Mumbai: you send the month’s sales and purchase data, we reconcile and file, and you receive the acknowledgement along with a one-page summary of tax paid and credit claimed.

Serving businesses in Mumbai online. Our team works from Noida, Uttar Pradesh — we do not run a branch in Mumbai. Documents are shared over WhatsApp or email and every filing is made on the official government portal.

What GST return filing covers for a business in Mumbai

A typical Mumbai business files GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of every month, issues e-invoices if turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, generates e-way bills for goods movement and closes the year with GSTR-9. Input credit is restricted to invoices your suppliers have actually reported, so reconciliation with GSTR-2B and the Invoice Management System is where most of the real work sits.

In Maharashtra, registration becomes compulsory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for services), and quarterly QRMP filers have until the 22nd of the month after the quarter for GSTR-3B. Inter-state sellers and most online sellers must register regardless of turnover.

Business in Mumbai and what it means for GST

Mumbai’s GST returns are dominated by services: brokers, fund managers, insurers’ agents, advertising and production houses, consultancies and the many firms that serve them. Financial services have their own exemptions and credit restrictions, and media work is full of intellectual-property supplies taxed differently from ordinary services. On the goods side are the gem and jewellery exporters of SEEPZ, the wholesale markets of Kalbadevi and Masjid Bunder, and importers clearing through the port.

Financial intermediaries and brokers

Exempt interest alongside taxable fees, with credit reversed under the formula.

Production houses and freelancers

Copyright and licensing supplies, and reverse charge on certain payments.

Jewellery exporters and importers

Zero-rated exports from the SEZ, and IGST paid at import claimed as credit.

GST points for the main business types here

IT & Service Companies. Service firms rarely have stock, so their GST risk sits in timing and classification. Tax is due on the invoice date or receipt of an advance, whichever is earlier — retainers and milestone advances included. Credit notes for cancelled work must be issued within the statutory window. And where several services are bundled, or staff are seconded between group companies, the rate and even the taxability depend on how the contract is written.

Exporters. Refund of input credit on exports under a Letter of Undertaking is worked out by formula — export turnover as a share of total turnover, applied to the credit on inputs and input services — and credit on capital goods is left out of it, which surprises units that have just bought machinery. The claim is filed period by period within two years, with a statement linking each invoice to its shipping bill. Exports by post or courier count too, if the export declaration is on record.

Wholesalers & Distributors. A distributor’s input credit has a shelf life. Credit on a purchase invoice must be claimed by 30 November after the financial year it belongs to, or it lapses — even if the supplier uploads the invoice later. Outward supplies are reported by HSN code, and once turnover crosses ₹5 crore every B2B invoice has to be an e-invoice. Old unmatched purchase invoices are therefore worth clearing well before the cut-off, not in the last week.

Why on-time GST filing matters here

  • Advances from clients are taxable when received; reporting them only when the invoice is raised leaves interest to pay.
  • A refund claim filed more than two years after the relevant date is rejected, however genuine the export.
  • Input credit not claimed by 30 November after the financial year is lost for good.
  • Late fees run per day of delay on every pending return, and interest at 18% a year applies on tax paid late.
  • Your buyers get input credit only when your GSTR-1 is filed — late filing is one of the quickest ways to lose a B2B customer.

From your bills to a filed return: our process

  1. Data in. You send the period’s sales and purchase bills — photographed bill books, an Excel sheet or a Tally, Busy or Vyapar export all work.
  2. Reconciliation. We match your purchases with GSTR-2B, list the suppliers who have not uploaded their invoices and work out the correct credit and tax payable.
  3. Your approval. You receive a short summary — sales, credit, tax to pay — and confirm it before anything is filed.
  4. Filing and record. Returns are filed before the due date and the acknowledgements are sent to you, with the next deadline already on our reminder list.

Searching for GST return filing near me from Mumbai?

When you search for “GST consultant near me” from Mumbai, what you actually need is someone who files correctly and on time — and GST filing has been a fully online process since day one. Returns are filed on the GST portal with an OTP or digital signature; no tax office visit is involved.

We are not located in Mumbai, and we do not pretend to be. Our team works from Patna and serves Mumbai remotely: documents by WhatsApp or email, questions by phone, filings on the portal. If your case genuinely needs someone physically present — a departmental visit to your premises, for example — we will tell you so plainly.

Questions about GST filing in Mumbai

Once your receipts cross ₹20 lakh you must register and charge 18% on your fees. Where an author assigns copyright in an original literary work to a publisher, the recipient may be liable under reverse charge instead; most screenwriting and content contracts, however, are ordinary taxable services.

Yes. Income-tax TDS is a part-payment of your income tax and does not reduce the value on which GST is charged. GST is computed on the full invoice value before any TDS, and the two taxes are accounted for separately.

Not through the Letter of Undertaking route: the refund formula there covers credit on inputs and input services only. Credit on capital goods stays in your ledger and can be used against tax on domestic sales. Exporters with heavy capital spending sometimes choose to export on payment of IGST for this reason.

Credit on an invoice must be claimed by 30 November following the end of the financial year to which it belongs, or by the date the annual return is filed, whichever is earlier. After that it lapses, even if the supplier reports the invoice later.

For monthly filers GSTR-1 is due on the 11th and GSTR-3B on the 20th of the following month. Under QRMP, the quarterly GSTR-1 is due on the 13th and GSTR-3B on the 22nd or 24th after the quarter, depending on the state. Composition dealers pay through CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter.

Yes. Every registered taxpayer must file a nil return for a period with no transactions. Late fees apply to nil returns as well, though at a lower per-day rate, and they keep adding up until the return is filed.
