GST return filing in Surat means keeping pace with a fast calendar and a large vendor base. Surat is the world’s leading diamond cutting and polishing centre and India’s largest producer of man-made fabrics, with textile markets along Ring Road, industrial estates at Sachin and Pandesara, and a workforce drawn from across the country.

What GST return filing covers for a business in Surat

A typical Surat business files GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of every month, issues e-invoices if turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, generates e-way bills for goods movement and closes the year with GSTR-9. Input credit is restricted to invoices your suppliers have actually reported, so reconciliation with GSTR-2B and the Invoice Management System is where most of the real work sits.

For businesses in Gujarat: the registration threshold is ₹40 lakh of turnover for goods and ₹20 lakh for services, quarterly filers under QRMP file GSTR-3B by the 22nd of the month following the quarter, and anyone supplying to another state — or selling goods through an online marketplace — generally needs registration from the first sale.

Business in Surat and what it means for GST

Both of Surat’s great trades run on job work. Rough diamonds pass from trader to cutter to polisher and back; yarn becomes grey fabric, is dyed and printed in processing mills, embroidered, and sold through the textile markets to buyers nationwide. At each step the question is whether goods were sold or merely worked on, and what tax the job worker charges. Fabric traders in the Ring Road markets issue thousands of invoices to out-of-state buyers; diamond exporters deal with imports of rough and exports of polished stones.

Diamond job workers and traders

Job charges at the concessional rate; consignments tracked on challans.

Weavers, processors and embroidery units

Each stage’s job work and credit, with inverted-rate refunds.

Textile-market traders

IGST sales to buyers across India, with goods returned through credit notes.

GST points for the main business types here

Manufacturers & MSME Units. A manufacturer’s GST follows the goods through the unit: credit comes in on raw material, packing and capital goods, tax goes out on dispatch, and what is lost, scrapped or given as free samples in between needs credit reversed. Finished-goods rates were reshuffled in the September 2025 rationalisation, so HSN-wise rates in the billing software — and the cost sheets built on them — are worth rechecking.

Wholesalers & Distributors. Wholesalers move goods as well as invoices, which brings in the e-way bill: consignments above the notified value need one before the vehicle leaves, even for a delivery within the state. On the purchase side, credit taken on a supplier’s invoice has to be reversed if the supplier is not paid within 180 days, and trade discounts given after the sale count for tax only through properly linked credit notes.

Exporters. Exporters either ship under a Letter of Undertaking without paying tax and claim a refund of accumulated input credit, or pay IGST and claim that back. Either way the refund depends on shipping bills, invoices and returns matching exactly. The LUT has to be renewed every financial year before the first export invoice.

Where GST filing goes wrong — and why it matters

  • An inverted duty position — inputs taxed higher than output — locks up cash unless the refund is claimed on time.
  • A vehicle stopped without a valid e-way bill faces detention and a penalty of up to twice the tax on the goods.
  • For exporters, a mismatch between the shipping bill and GSTR-1 holds up the refund and locks working capital.
  • Continuous non-filing leads to blocked e-way bills and eventually suspension or cancellation of the GSTIN.
  • Returns older than three years from their due date can no longer be filed at all, so an old backlog cannot be left to “sort out later”.

From your bills to a filed return: our process

  1. Onboarding. We review your registration, past returns and any pending notices so there are no surprises in the first filing.
  2. Monthly data cut-off. By an agreed date each month you share sales, purchases, debit/credit notes and advances — from your billing software or as scanned bills.
  3. Credit check. Purchases are matched invoice by invoice with GSTR-2B; mismatches go back to you as a supplier follow-up list.
  4. Review, file, report. You approve the computation, we file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and you get the acknowledgements with a month-wise tracker.

Looking for “GST filing near me” in Surat?

Nearness matters less for GST return filing in Surat than it seems: the portal, the payment challan and the acknowledgement are all online, and nothing in the process requires meeting the practitioner after the first conversation.

Returns for businesses in Surat are prepared at our Patna office. You can reach us by phone or WhatsApp during business hours, and every filing is shared back with you. We do not have an office in Surat, so if you specifically want someone to collect papers in person, a local practitioner may suit you better — for everything else, distance makes no difference.

Questions about GST filing in Surat

Only on your job-work charges, at the rate notified for job work on diamonds — not on the value of the stones, which remain the principal’s property. The stones move to and from you on delivery challans and must be returned within the permitted time.

Usually yes. Where credit accumulates because the rate on inputs exceeds the rate on output, a refund of the unutilised credit can be claimed, with some exclusions notified by the government. The claim is made online, period-wise, within two years.

If the consignment value exceeds the limit notified for movement within the state, yes — distance does not exempt it, though very short movements have a relaxation for vehicle details. For any movement to another state the limit is ₹50,000.

When IGST is paid on exports, the refund is processed automatically once the shipping bill and GSTR-1 match. Refund of accumulated credit under LUT needs a separate application; a clean claim is normally sanctioned within the statutory 60 days, with 90% released provisionally in eligible cases.

We quote a fixed monthly or quarterly fee in writing after looking at your volume of invoices and the returns involved. There is no charge for the first conversation and no fee added afterwards.

QRMP lets taxpayers with turnover up to ₹5 crore file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly by challan. It cuts filings from 24 to 8 a year; buyers can still get monthly credit if you upload invoices through the IFF.
