Mumbai is India’s financial capital — home to the stock exchanges, the Reserve Bank and the head offices of banks and funds — and also a port city with a jewellery trade at Zaveri Bazaar, an export zone at SEEPZ and the country’s largest film and media industry. Returns filed from here range from a single Form 16 to audited business accounts, and the Annual Information Statement now shows the department almost everything before you declare it.

Income tax return filing in Mumbai: what is involved

Most returns from Mumbai combine several heads: salary with HRA and perquisites, capital gains from shares, mutual funds or property, rental income and sometimes foreign assets that need separate disclosure. Each is cross-checked with the Annual Information Statement before the old and new regimes are compared and the form — ITR-1 to ITR-4 for individuals — is chosen.

Returns for a financial year are due by 31 July for salaried and other non-business taxpayers, 31 August for business and professional returns without audit, and 31 October where a tax audit applies. From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies and the year is called the “tax year”. Maharashtra levies professional tax on salaries; the amount your employer deducts is allowed as a deduction under the old regime. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Mumbai is one of the eight cities where up to 50% of basic salary can be exempt.

Who files income tax returns in Mumbai

No city has more active investors, and Mumbai returns show it: equity and derivatives trading, mutual funds, bonds, dividends and — in a market where flats cost crores — large property transactions. Futures and options are business income needing a balance sheet, not capital gains. Salaried employees in finance receive bonuses and deferred pay; film and media professionals have many payers and TDS entries. Maharashtra levies professional tax, and Mumbai is in the 50% category for house rent allowance.

Equity and F&O traders

Derivatives treated as non-speculative business income, with turnover computed for audit purposes.

Finance-sector employees

Bonuses, deferred compensation and ESOPs taxed in the right year.

Film, television and advertising professionals

Receipts from many producers matched with TDS; presumptive scheme where eligible.

What to watch, by type of taxpayer

Investors & Property Sellers. Capital gains are computed asset by asset. Equity shares and equity funds turn long-term after one year; property and unlisted shares after two; debt funds bought since April 2023 are taxed at slab rates whatever the holding period. Losses can be set off only against the right kind of gain and carried forward for eight years — but only if the return is filed by the due date.

Salaried Professionals. Company payrolls compute tax on what the employee declares at the start of the year, and the return is where that estimate is corrected. Proofs not submitted in time, a bonus or joining payment later recovered, notice-pay deductions, leave travel claims and the employer’s contribution to NPS — deductible up to 14% of salary under the new regime — all change the final figure. Income outside salary, such as interest or freelance fees, is never in Form 16.

Doctors, Advocates & Consultants. Professionals with receipts up to ₹50 lakh (₹75 lakh if cash receipts are within 5%) may declare half of their receipts as income under the presumptive scheme and file ITR-4. TDS deducted by hospitals, companies and clients appears in the tax statement and must be claimed in full; advance tax is due in a single instalment by 15 March.

What a careless return can cost

  • A capital loss is carried forward only when the return for the loss year is filed on time.
  • Tax short-deducted by the employer is still the employee’s liability, payable with interest before the return is filed.
  • Professionals who ignore advance tax pay interest every year on an amount they could have planned for.
  • A return filed after the due date carries a late fee and interest, and some losses can no longer be carried forward.
  • Banks and visa offices usually ask for the returns of the last two or three years, filed on time.

How we prepare your return

  1. First conversation. We note your sources of income and tell you exactly which documents are needed — no generic list.
  2. Reconciliation. Salary, interest, TDS and reported transactions in the AIS are tied to your records; any wrong entry is flagged for feedback on the portal.
  3. Regime and form. Old and new regimes are computed side by side, the correct ITR form is chosen and the draft is shared with you.
  4. File, verify, follow up. After your approval we file and e-verify, then track processing, the intimation and the refund.

Income tax filing in Mumbai — frequently asked questions

No. Trading in derivatives on a recognised exchange is non-speculative business income or loss, reported in ITR-3 with a profit-and-loss account. A loss can be set off against other income except salary and carried forward for eight years if the return is filed on time.

Yes, and it is in your interest. A loss reported in a return filed by the due date can be carried forward for eight years and set off against future capital gains. A loss that is not reported, or is reported in a late return, is lost.

Yes. Deductions you are entitled to under the regime you choose can be claimed in the return even if the employer did not allow them, provided you hold the proof. The excess TDS then comes back as a refund. HRA claimed directly in the return needs rent receipts and, above the limit, the landlord’s PAN.

The 50% presumptive scheme is for specified professions such as medicine, law, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy and interior decoration. Other freelancers may fall under the business presumptive scheme instead. We check your work against the list before choosing the form.

The new regime has lower rates and makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free after rebate, but drops most deductions. The old regime helps when HRA, home-loan interest and investments are large. We compute both every year and show you the difference.

Filing is mandatory above the basic exemption limit and in certain cases regardless of income — large bank deposits, foreign travel spend or high electricity bills, for example. Even when optional, a return is often worth filing to claim a TDS refund or to build income proof for loans.
