Pune pairs one of India’s largest automobile and engineering clusters — at Pimpri-Chinchwad and Chakan — with a major IT base at Hinjawadi, Kharadi and Magarpatta and a long-standing reputation as a university city. Returns filed from here range from a single Form 16 to audited business accounts, and the Annual Information Statement now shows the department almost everything before you declare it.

Tax VKV Group offers income tax return filing online to taxpayers in Pune: you share your documents, we choose the correct form, compare both tax regimes, show you the computation and file only after you approve it.

Serving businesses in Pune online. Our team works from Noida, Uttar Pradesh — we do not run a branch in Pune. Documents are shared over WhatsApp or email and every filing is made on the official government portal.

Income tax return filing in Pune: what is involved

Most returns from Pune combine several heads: salary with HRA and perquisites, capital gains from shares, mutual funds or property, rental income and sometimes foreign assets that need separate disclosure. Each is cross-checked with the Annual Information Statement before the old and new regimes are compared and the form — ITR-1 to ITR-4 for individuals — is chosen.

Key dates: 31 July for individuals without business income, 31 August for business and professional returns not requiring audit, 31 October for audited cases, and 31 December for a belated return. Income earned from 1 April 2026 falls under the new Income-tax Act, 2025, which calls the year the “tax year”. Maharashtra levies professional tax on salaries; the amount your employer deducts is allowed as a deduction under the old regime. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Pune is one of the eight cities where up to 50% of basic salary can be exempt.

Who files income tax returns in Pune

Engineers in automobile companies and IT firms make up most of Pune’s taxpayers, many holding stock awards and many repaying loans on flats in the city’s expanding suburbs. Second homes and investment flats bring rental income and, on sale, capital gains. Maharashtra levies professional tax, and from 2026-27 Pune is one of the eight cities where the HRA limit is 50% of salary.

Automobile and IT employees

Form 16, stock awards and the regime decision with a home loan.

Owners of a second flat

Rent, deemed let-out rules and interest on the loan.

Founders and employees of start-ups

ESOPs and unlisted shares.

Points for each kind of taxpayer

Salaried Professionals. Company payrolls compute tax on what the employee declares at the start of the year, and the return is where that estimate is corrected. Proofs not submitted in time, a bonus or joining payment later recovered, notice-pay deductions, leave travel claims and the employer’s contribution to NPS — deductible up to 14% of salary under the new regime — all change the final figure. Income outside salary, such as interest or freelance fees, is never in Form 16.

Investors & Property Sellers. Capital gains are computed asset by asset. Equity shares and equity funds turn long-term after one year; property and unlisted shares after two; debt funds bought since April 2023 are taxed at slab rates whatever the holding period. Losses can be set off only against the right kind of gain and carried forward for eight years — but only if the return is filed by the due date.

Founders & Startups. Founders usually have three tax positions at once: director’s remuneration from the company, the company’s own return in ITR-6, and shares or ESOPs that create perquisite and capital-gains questions. Eligible start-up employees can defer tax on ESOPs. Unlisted shares and foreign assets must be disclosed in detail in the personal return.

What a careless return can cost

  • Tax short-deducted by the employer is still the employee’s liability, payable with interest before the return is filed.
  • A capital loss is carried forward only when the return for the loss year is filed on time.
  • Directors and holders of unlisted shares cannot use the simple ITR-1 — filing it makes the return defective.
  • Refunds are issued only after the return is filed, e-verified and processed — and only to a pre-validated bank account.
  • The department already sees interest, dividends, share trades and high-value purchases in the AIS; an unexplained gap produces a notice.

From documents to a filed return: our process

  1. Documents in. You send Form 16 or income details, bank statements and investment proofs — photos over WhatsApp are fine.
  2. Cross-check. We download your AIS and tax statement and match every entry with your papers, so nothing is missed or counted twice.
  3. Computation for approval. You see the tax under both regimes, the refund or tax payable, and confirm before filing.
  4. Filing and e-verification. The return is filed, e-verified with Aadhaar OTP and the acknowledgement sent to you; we watch the refund status afterwards.

Questions about income tax filing in Pune

Up to two houses can be treated as self-occupied with nil annual value, so a second flat kept for your own use need not be taxed on notional rent. Interest on loans for self-occupied houses is deductible only under the old regime, within the overall limit.

Yes. Deductions you are entitled to under the regime you choose can be claimed in the return even if the employer did not allow them, provided you hold the proof. The excess TDS then comes back as a refund. HRA claimed directly in the return needs rent receipts and, above the limit, the landlord’s PAN.

Yes, and it is in your interest. A loss reported in a return filed by the due date can be carried forward for eight years and set off against future capital gains. A loss that is not reported, or is reported in a late return, is lost.

Directors and anyone holding unlisted shares must use ITR-2, or ITR-3 if they also have business or professional income — never ITR-1 or ITR-4. The return asks for your DIN and the details of each company and shareholding.

A belated return can be filed until 31 December following the financial year, with a late fee of up to ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if income is up to ₹5 lakh) and interest on unpaid tax. After that an updated return is possible for up to 48 months, at an additional tax cost.

Most refunds are credited within a few weeks of e-verification, once the return is processed. Delays usually come from an unvalidated bank account, a mismatch with the tax statement or an old outstanding demand that is being adjusted — all of which we check for.
