Chennai is a port city and the centre of India’s automobile industry, with assembly plants and component makers at Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Ambattur, an IT corridor along Old Mahabalipuram Road, and retail districts such as T. Nagar and George Town. Returns filed from here range from a single Form 16 to audited business accounts, and the Annual Information Statement now shows the department almost everything before you declare it.

For taxpayers in Chennai our team works remotely — document check, AIS reconciliation, regime comparison, filing and e-verification, with one person answering your questions throughout.

Serving businesses in Chennai online. Our team works from Noida, Uttar Pradesh — we do not run a branch in Chennai. Documents are shared over WhatsApp or email and every filing is made on the official government portal.

Income tax return filing in Chennai: what is involved

Returns from Chennai are increasingly pre-filled, and that is the risk: salary, interest, dividends, securities trades and even foreign remittances arrive in the Annual Information Statement, and a return that simply accepts the pre-fill inherits its errors. Proper filing means checking each entry, adding what the statement misses — rent, foreign assets, off-market sales — then choosing the form and the regime with the numbers in front of you.

Key dates: 31 July for individuals without business income, 31 August for business and professional returns not requiring audit, 31 October for audited cases, and 31 December for a belated return. Income earned from 1 April 2026 falls under the new Income-tax Act, 2025, which calls the year the “tax year”. Tamil Nadu levies professional tax on salaries; the amount your employer deducts is allowed as a deduction under the old regime. For house rent allowance under the old regime, Chennai is one of the eight cities where up to 50% of basic salary can be exempt.

Who files income tax returns in Chennai

Employees of automobile, IT and banking companies, owners of the many engineering and export firms, and long-established trading families are Chennai’s main taxpayers. Gold and property are favoured investments, and sales of inherited houses and jewellery are frequent. Tamil Nadu collects professional tax half-yearly through local bodies, deducted by employers, and Chennai is in the 50% category for house rent allowance.

What to watch, by type of taxpayer

Salaried Professionals. Private-sector returns turn on details: two Form 16s after a job change (with the standard deduction and basic exemption counted twice by mistake), HRA where rent is paid, employer NPS, and stock options taxed first as salary and later as capital gains. Each needs to be traced through the Annual Information Statement.

Investors & Property Sellers. Capital gains are computed asset by asset. Equity shares and equity funds turn long-term after one year; property and unlisted shares after two; debt funds bought since April 2023 are taxed at slab rates whatever the holding period. Losses can be set off only against the right kind of gain and carried forward for eight years — but only if the return is filed by the due date.

Firms & Companies. Businesses above the presumptive limits keep full books, and a tax audit applies once turnover crosses ₹1 crore — or ₹10 crore where cash receipts and payments are each within 5%. The audit report goes in a month before the return. Companies and LLPs file every year regardless of profit, and partners’ remuneration and interest have their own limits.

Why the details in a return matter

  • After a job change, both employers often give the basic exemption — leaving tax due at filing, with interest.
  • A capital loss is carried forward only when the return for the loss year is filed on time.
  • A tax audit report filed late draws a penalty of up to 0.5% of turnover, separate from any tax.
  • The department already sees interest, dividends, share trades and high-value purchases in the AIS; an unexplained gap produces a notice.
  • Refunds are issued only after the return is filed, e-verified and processed — and only to a pre-validated bank account.

How we prepare your return

  1. First conversation. We note your sources of income and tell you exactly which documents are needed — no generic list.
  2. Reconciliation. Salary, interest, TDS and reported transactions in the AIS are tied to your records; any wrong entry is flagged for feedback on the portal.
  3. Regime and form. Old and new regimes are computed side by side, the correct ITR form is chosen and the draft is shared with you.
  4. File, verify, follow up. After your approval we file and e-verify, then track processing, the intimation and the refund.

What to send us

The exact list depends on your income, and we confirm it in the first conversation. For most taxpayers:

Mistakes that lead to notices and lost refunds

These errors recur in returns filed in a hurry or without the tax statement:

ITR filing in Chennai: common questions

Yes. Jewellery is a capital asset. The cost is what the previous owner paid, or the fair market value on 1 April 2001 if acquired before then, and the holding period includes the previous owner’s. Long-term gains are taxed at 12.5%.

Income from both employers is combined and tax is recomputed, because each employer usually gives the full exemption and standard deduction. Any shortfall is paid as self-assessment tax before filing. Give us both Form 16s — or salary slips if one is missing.

Yes, and it is in your interest. A loss reported in a return filed by the due date can be carried forward for eight years and set off against future capital gains. A loss that is not reported, or is reported in a late return, is lost.

Broadly, when turnover exceeds ₹1 crore (₹10 crore if at least 95% of receipts and payments are non-cash), when professional receipts exceed ₹50 lakh outside the presumptive scheme, or when a presumptive taxpayer declares lower profit with taxable income. The audit report is due by 30 September.

Yes. A revised return can be filed if you find an omission or error, within the time allowed after the end of the financial year. From the returns for FY 2025-26, revisions made after 31 December carry an additional fee.

For a financial year, 31 July for salaried and other non-business individuals, 31 August for business or professional returns that do not need audit, and 31 October for audit cases. A belated return can be filed up to 31 December with a late fee.
